St. Anthony School Drayton Valley

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten program at St. Anthony School provides a foundation for children as they begin their educational program. Following the Kindergarten Program Statement from Alberta Education, the students are provided with many opportunities and activities to help them develop and learn. Parental involvement is encouraged, beginning with a “Welcome To Kindergarten” workshop for parents to learn how to support their children in their educational program. Early literacy and numeracy skills are an integral part of the program and are reinforced through many of the daily activities and learning centers. Through stories, music, celebrations, field trips and daily activities the children are able to explore their environment. Special moments and experiences of the children help them to begin to grow in relationship with each other and with God. The year closes with a liturgical celebration, followed by a luncheon at the church to recognize the students as the “gift from God” that they are.

On Thursday June 18, St. Anthony School, with provincial sponsor The Learning Partnership, hosted Drayton Valley’s first Welcome to Kindergarten day. Students and parents were delighted to meet the teachers and administration of the school as well as receive information on how they can get ready for their first year of school. The Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) initiative was developed by The Learning Partnership as a way to provide pre-school children and their families with tools to begin their school experience through early learning nurtured in the home.

“My son, Alexander, and I had a wonderful time at the Welcome to Kindergarten night. As a father, it was nice to get some practical tips on reading, writing, diet, and safety. I would recommend it to other parents,” said Colin Webb.

Bernadette Foster, kindergarten teacher at St. Anthony School, was able to organize an impressive number of representatives from community agencies. Public Health Nursing, Injury Prevention, Speech and Language, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, School Health, Dental and Mental Health Services provided information, displays and activities at the orientation. Children and parents were engaged at these interesting, hands-on stations hosted by these agencies and school staff. Students helped make a healthy snack with nutritionist Merv Liebel, while others read a story from the WTK Bag with Sue Degeal SLP. The teachers and students had fun getting to know each other while they made and played with play dough.

Pat Semeniuk from The Learning Partnership commended St. Anthony School and Mrs. Foster for their excellent work pulling together the community agencies, “This was the best session I have been to in terms of community support”.

“It was a great success. We’ve have received positive feedback from parents at both the afternoon and evening sessions,” says Bernadette Foster, “We are looking forward to continuing this initiative next spring with our new kindergarten registrations.”

“It was a good opportunity for people to learn what’s in the community for their children and themselves” says Jessica Doucette, School Health Facilitator with Alberta Health Services. “The Welcome to Kindergarten Bag is full of excellent resources to help get kids ready for their first year of school. I think everyone had a good time.”
