Electives

ELECTIVE SELECTION FOR GRADE 7 / 8

Complimentary Courses or electives are designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore courses that either offer something different from or enhance the core curriculum.  During their junior high years, students should select a variety of complimentary courses to explore many areas of study.

Art

Students will explore the elements of line and color through drawing, painting, and sculpture. Students will be required to purchase various art supplies for this course.

Band 

Have fun continuing group instrumental instruction, with improved technical and aural skills as a goal. A variety of styles of music will be experienced. Students are responsible for their own instrument but may rent from the school for a reasonable costPLEASE NOTE BAND IS A FULL YEAR ELECTIVE. (This elective requires a minimum of 15 students)

Basic Photography:

Basic Photography is a course for the beginning photographer who has just picked up a camera. Control of basic photographic principles such as exposure, focus, subject selection and depth of field is the primary focus of this course, along with an exploration into composition and stylistic approach. Students are encouraged to discuss ideas and concepts with both the instructor and fellow students in an environment that welcomes input and exploration.  Fee to be determined.

Cooking & Nutrition

This is an introductory course to familiarize students with cooking terms, instruments and recipes as well as developing knowledge of the Canada Food Guide.  Fee to be determined.

Drama

Drama is a fun, energy-filled class focusing on games and activities which develop the confidence to perform. Students will take part in improvisation, developing radio plays, tableau, monologues, dialogues, skits and plays.

Guitar

This is a basic introduction to guitar.  Students are responsible for their own guitar instrumentPLEASE NOTE Guitar IS A FULL YEAR ELECTIVE. (This elective requires a minimum of 15 students)

The cost will be $180.

Robotics

An introduction to the world of robotics using the Lego robotics kits. You will experience building and programming your robot to perform a variety of skills.

Sewing         

Students will learn the basics of sewing using machines.  They will learn to operate a sewing machine and identify and use basic sewing and pressing tools, using these to create two projects.  This course will require the students to have a basic sewing kit.  As well, students will be responsible for purchasing their own sewing project. There is a $5.00 fee for this course.

Sewing 2

Students will continue to practice the skills used in Sewing 1. Students in this course will complete a minimum of 2 projects chosen from a list provided by the instructor. Students are responsible for providing their own sewing kit, fabric, and patterns. A supply list will be given on the first day. This course will run in conjunction with Sewing – 1

Stylin’

An introduction to the manner and mode of expression (new and old) with particular emphasis on body image, cosmetology, hair and clothing. Students will be responsible for supplies.

Techin’ 1

An introduction to computers covering all the bases including – keyboarding, Microsoft products, and some fun projects.

Wildlife

An introduction to environmental education and wildlife with particular emphasis on the Alberta and Canadian context.

Woodworking        

An introduction to woodworking using hand tools. A variety of projects for all. A few new ones for those involved before.  Students will be responsible for supplies.  There will be a $10 fee to cover the cost of materials.
